Look at human body...god has created it,...also it is one of the most perfect design...and it survives also it has taken long period of improvement and transformation,....the idea is simple "A good design will sustain". I see around me and lots of things...and feel like "it should have been better, I walk down to my college to home and even in this distance of 2 km see lots of not so good stuff,...like the roads,..foot path, red light crossings, pedestrian crossing,...nothing is in alignment to each other...even a simple twist can make it more functional,...Yes! the design has to be functional otherwise it will fail to survive in this world. Take any product you use it has been design by some one, your pencil sharpener, the pen you use, the cloths use, and almost every of it has gone with some amount of transformation/development. So design is every where you can't ignore it. And how one come with a good design and another just don't....answer is "Research" the more you research, more you explore with the idea, ....you actually have to live with that idea,... Brainstorm about it,...and then you will come with the Eureka! moment...but you have to give yourself to achieve it. I learned it during my whole experience with "design" it is one of the most beautiful experience to create and I don't no why people don't enjoy it and don't want to give effort to create "sustainable" design. They just don't have it and there are plenty of excuse...we need to change...
A good design will survive...one day design will change the world!
